Since the history of our civilization, we have always depended on a system of navigation to tell us where we are. A system of navigation was needed by the peoples in our past in order to keep walking and progressing. Seafarers or sailors were the first experts in terms of navigating. The map of stars was their map and accurate guide. Same thing with the nomads who lived in the desert, the sky served as their map. Instruments like the sextant were used to measure the latitude.

One of the most useful inventions in the field of navigation is the compass. Without a compass, it would be difficult to interpret a map. The problem with the sextant was that it only measured the latitude, and sailors needed more exact information that’s why the British came up with chronometers. Chronometers and sextants were used together. During the Second World War, an accurate navigation system meant victory. Radio navigation systems were used and were of outmost importance.

Satelitte navigation was an offshoot when Sputnik was launched. In the 70s, the US Department of Defense worked on the Global Positioning System. As satelittes were launched, the system became more sophisticated and currently, there are 24 satelittes orbiting the earth.

A decade after using the system for military purposes, the technology was made open to the public. Initially, GPS devices were introduced to cars. The first GPS devices though did not have internet connection, and only had preloaded maps. As the technology developed the devices became GPS receivers which provided real time navigational support.

Nowadays, when we here GPS, were are not just referring to cars but to many different devices as well. Personal devices like phones and GPS watches provide help especially to those who are into outdoor sports. It’s a whole lot safer waking in the wilderness now. With GPS watches on the other hand, it’s like having a personal trainer. Just look at Garmin 910XT review and Garmin 110 review sites.
