Handheld GPS by Memory Map
Hello everybody, it’s Richard Lopez again from SatelliteMapReview.com and today I’d like to have a look at the Memory Map Adventurer series of GPS devices. I’ve already discussed a few outstanding GPS mapping devices such as the Satmap Active 10 Plus and the Garmin Montana series. The reason I like these models is because of the quality of the on-screen mapping options. It used to be that a handheld GPS device would just do the basics, giving you your GPS co-ordinates, your bearing and perhaps a very basic rendering of your environment, but nothing resembling a real map. Now, with the Montana series, Satmap Active 10 and the Memory Map Adventurer series GPS is so much more than just, well, GPS! These GPS devices use Ordnance Survey-powered maps generated on-screen to give you an unprecedented all-round vision and understanding of your physical environment whilst laying all your GPS and positional tools over the top. So, let’s have a look at what Memory Map have to offer with their Adventurer series of GPS.
The Adventurer series from Memory Map consists of two models, both with a distinctive yellow cover. These are the smaller 2800 model, and the slightly larger 3500 model. The difference is in the size and price. The 2800 model is smaller, more rectangular and preferred by some because of its size whereas the 3500 is more like a tablet size and comes with the option of a handy stylus. Both of the devices run off an excellent and high-powered 50 channel GPS receiver which gives an excellent and quick lock on and stays strong in all conditions.
The Adventurer 2800 and 3500 series both run off Ordnance Survey style maps. As I said at the outset, one of the key things for quality in GPS for me is the standard of the mapping and in this aspect Memory Map does not let you down. Both these models have capability for the Landranger and Explorer Ordnance Survey mapping options which means you can get full access to the quality colour maps on your GPS screen. You can get different scales of map on the Adventurer series of GPS according to your needs and navigation.
The Memory Map Adventurer series 2800 model and 3500 model operate via a touchscreen interface. The 3500 model is slightly more expensive and comes with a handy stylus option for those days when your hands are cold and you are wearing gloves. The screen for both models is a high resolution 96,000 pixels. The screen size itself measures 2.8 inches and 3.5 inches for the 2800 model and 3500 model respectively. The latter also has the capability for Marine charts for those of you who want to use GPS while out on the water.
The Memory Map Adventurer series usually come with some sort of preloaded mapping, but you would need to check your GPS on purchase. However, the Memory Map V5 collection has plenty of mapping options available for the purchase. You just select which area you want to navigate in and download the relevant map. Both models have the addition of PC software which you can use in conjunction with your GPS unit. This allows you to store data, plan routes and analyse your trips between the PC and the GPS.
The main thing to remember about the Memory Map Adventurer series is that the mapping options and the digital rendering of the features on screen are excellent, one of the most important things for me that a handheld GPS can possess.
