Did You Realize That Leatherman Has Morfed Into Our Militarys Companion?
Leatherman Mut has been named the “shooters sidekick.” This multi-tool was made in conjunction with the United States Army. This is the first multi-tool of its kind that was designed to provide tactical support for active duty military. Introduced in October 2010, the MUT reduces the number of tools a soldier needs to carry with him. A focus of this Leatherman is for use in dis-assembling, repairing and cleaning firearms.
This impressive tool was created primarily with military use in mind, however there has been a greater benefit to civilian markets as well. This is a must have tool for law enforcement, hunters, tactical shooters for recreation and sport and even for hobbyist that love the sport of target practicing.
At first glance, the MUT resembles a Leatherman Super Tool. A closer look, however, reveals major changes. A knife blade, accessible without opening the handles, appears to be longer and made of thicker steel than the Super Tool blade. A simple, one-handed move makes the blade immediately accessible. It locks into place and has a serrated edge that provides rope-cutting ease. A mini-saw is one more tool that is available without opening the handles.
The MUT comes with a small knob that will double as a hammer. It has a carbineer clip and also a bottle opener. These are neatly tucked into one of the handles. Another feature to note is that all of the cutouts for accessing the tools seem to be larger and deeper making it simpler to flick the tools out with little to no effort.
Designed for the tactical shooter, the Leatherman MUT also has a pin-punch set. Used in conjunction with the aforementioned hammer, you can easily drive the pins for breaking down your M-1, M-16, and the AR-15′s. The socket that houses the punch set also holds the bronze scraper and brush that are included in this multi-tool. This socket is a standard 832 thread making it interchangeable with military cleaning rods. A bolt override tool comes in handy when a bolt jams and needle nose pliers aid in firing pin retainer removal and bolt disassembly.
It wouldn’t be right to have all this without the ability to work on your scope. On the inside of the handles are the necessary tools for working with optics, torx, hex and Philips bits that are all replaceable when worn out. There is a cutter that is designed to take care of flexi cuffs, tie-wraps, chord material and any kind of strapping you may encounter in the field. This of course has a replaceable blade as well. Included is a 3/8 and a 1/2 wrench that will assist in attaching your optics to the rail. The bits that come with this tactical tool are the specialty bits you need to make adjustments to your different types of scopes.
The carrying sheath is called a MOLLE Sheathe. The acronym stands for “Modular Lightweight Load-Carrying Equipment” and simply means that it has additional pockets to carry a 9mm pistol magazine and a flashlight, as well as other lightweight tools.
An additional model, the MUT EOD, also has wire cutters, a cap crimper and a C4 punch and retains the AR-15 operator features. The number of tools on this model totals 17, plus the three-piece bit kit.
