Protect Your IP Address While Surfing the Internet
We all go to lengths to protect what we consider to be personal information-credit card information, address, phone number, etc. However, few think to protect something that is often of equal importance-the IP address. An IP address is defined as the numeric address on a computer that is accessible on the Internet. Other computers may view your computers IP address when you send and receive data. This can be detrimental; if someone with the wrong intention obtains your computer’s IP address, they can access your data and intercept traffic coming from your computer.
Luckily, certain measures can be taken to keep you-and your IP address-safe!
Proxy Servers
While to many non-techies, the word “proxy server” does not mean much more than normal computer jargon, we must impress upon you the importance of understanding the role of the proxy server when it comes to your own personal data. The data coming to and from your computer is relayed by something called a proxy server. This is a crucial part of your computer, and involves your information connection. In the case that someone would try to access your computer, they would be able to do so via a proxy server. Functionality for these servers is built into markets today by web browsers, and the only action required to mask your IP is editing the browser settings that affect your proxy.
Onion Routing
However, diligent hackers can bypass a proxy locked proxy server. For those of us who wish to have even greater levels of protection, onion routing is a possibility on modern computers. This is an intense encryption technology with a series of proxy servers that protect your computer. To set up an onion route, one simply needs to install and configure a piece of software labeled “onion routing” and set it up.
Your online security is important. Don’t take it for granted that you’re browsing the Internet safely. If you’re concerned with keeping your computer, and your personal information safe on the Internet, consider using a proxy service, or onion routing.
