The Butterfly valve is a device generally used as a hydraulic shut-off valve (on / off) and, more rarely, to regulate the flow rate in behavior of liquid under pressure.

In the waterworks field, the throttle valve as a shut-off is often used in place of the gate because of much smaller footprint and easier maintenance. The organ is a hard plug that rotates around an axis normal to the pipe, blocking the passage.

The disc and the valve body may be cast iron or steel (including stainless).
